New Picture – I took some pictures of the students acting out a temper tantrum that a naughty pigeon throws in the story Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems. Too cute not to share!

Nationality Exploration – Thank you to everyone who already returned the white sheet of paper where you wrote the countries your families came from! Also thank you for your willingness to help your child explore their nationality. We only have 2 weeks before our Luncheon and I would love to have all the students share something related to a country they are from before then. It can be as simple as a picture or heirloom (if it’s expensive or breakable I recommend setting up a time with me that you can come in with the heirloom!) or as complex as making something or teaching us a few written or spoken words of a language! Please send in this piece ASAP so I can manage our time and help all students share with the class! PLEASE SEND IN THE PINK AND WHITE FORMS IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY!

March Friday 3/23 – Around the World Luncheon. If you are able, please bring a kid-friendly, nut free dish labeled with the country from which it originates! 11AM – 12PM.

Literacy

The students have completed a “How-to” book and we are starting to write a “Question and Answer” book on Monday as part of an Informational Writing Unit. We are leading up to writing an “All about” book. These will be a little longer as the students take them through the entire writing process before they are published. I am looking forward to seeing the students use some of the informational text features we’ve been looking for during guided reading!

Try it at home! Dr. Seuss’ birthday was a week ago. Tim Tebow and Justin Bieber read us a couple of his books! Check out the Dr. Suess website for games and activities! http://www.seussville.com/

Math

In math the students have been learning about Fact Families, Fact Triangles, centimeters, time in 5 minute intervals and how to find information in the Everyday math Reference Book. Many of these things help us practice many skills we’ve been working on all year such as addition, subtraction, measurement, time and money. Though we’ve been talking about place value off and on all year, now students will be expected to know ones and tens place value on an upcoming test, so we’ve started to practice that a little more seriously. We also finally learned about the quarter (the student’s have been waiting for this for a while!).

Try it at home! PLEASE, use and save the fact triangles that come home as homework. Cut them up and store them somewhere they won’t be lost and practice practice practice!!!!!!!!

Star of the Week

Alana was a great star of the week! She shared with us about her family, interest in Karate and read us a book in her fluent, expressive reading voice! Alana enjoys school and playing with her friends. She is a great student and has a positive attitude!

Katelyn enjoyed leading the line and sharing her favorite book with us during her star week. Katelyn showed us her wonderful poster she made including pictures of her family and all the things she loves to do. Katelyn also enjoys spending time with her friends and family and being at school (hooray!). Katelyn is a kind, wonderful person!

Nicholas was star of the week last week. Nicholas loves sports, but we already knew that! He also likes the colors orange and pink and pizza is his favorite food. He brought in a book written by Donald Driver to share with us and it was a big hit – but not as big of a hit as his birthday cupcakes! Nicholas is a respectful, hardworking student!

NEXT WEEK’S STAR: Isaac

Have a Wonderful Week!
