Upcoming Events and Important Info

New Pictures from Valentines Day – We had so much fun making crafts and showing our friends in the class that we care!

Thursday February 23rd – Is an early release day! Students will be released at 1pm. No school on Friday the 24th.

Student Led Conferences – Thursday, March 1st PVE is having our first student-led conference night! If you have not confirmed your time with me, please do so ASAP!!!

Missing Mittens? – Especially now with the beautiful science projects being displayed in the hallway, it’s important to keep our belongings safe and neat! Students receive several reminders a day to put their coats, boots, hats, snow pants, mittens, scarves, etc. in their cubbies in the hallway or on their hooks. If items get left on the floor after school, they go to Lost and Found since the custodians need to be able to clean. If your child is missing anything, feel free to come in and check Lost and Found!

Literacy

Guided reading groups are going wonderfully. We worked on rhyming words and guessing the covered up word in some groups. In other groups we met as a “book club” to discuss what was happening on the pages we were all assigned to read. Some students came home with small pink bookmarks that were on the page they had to read to by a certain day. If your child has one of those in their book, please help them remember to read the assigned pages by the next time I meet with their group! Maybe you heard that on Friday, Rocky Klug the pug dog came for a visit. This special guest was a result of this wonderful class being safe, respectful, responsible and trying their best to learn and follow directions! Each time the whole class does something wonderful or is working really well, independently or together, they earn another puzzle piece, Once the puzzle gets to a certain checkpoint, they earn a prize! Rocky was the grand finale – the whole puzzle is put together! Now I will take it down so we can start all over earning new prizes!

Try it at home! Alphabetize those leftover candy hearts! We have done a few different alphabetizing activities throughout the year… students should definitely be able to at least put them in order by the first letter on each heart.

Math

This week in math the students practiced addition and subtraction facts in a variety of ways. We practiced making Name Collection Boxes and Fact Families the most – a family letter on Fact Families will be send in the near future! They are all working hard to gain a lot of “fact power” so that simple addition and subtraction problems are easy for them to do in their head. Sometimes we flex our muscles a little before the lesson to remind us how powerful we can get if we practice! On the 100th day of school we talked about the number 100 using many different units: cents, dollars, years, days, etc. The students also learned about the Addition/Subtraction Fact Table - I call it the Cheat Sheet. If your child did not understand how to do this correctly (as seen in the Homelink where they had to color the parrot filled with addition problems), please let me know!

Try it at home! Make more name collection boxes! The students enjoy math even more when they get to use Expo (white board) markers. You can make your own white board with a firm piece of paper and a paper protector pocket (clear plastic you put paper in).

Star of the Week

Oliver was a wonderful star of the week and Birthday Boy! He read us Hop on Pop by Dr. Suess and brought in delicious popcorn balls! Oliver loves pizza, skareboarding and playing Xbox. His family shared some awesome letters and stories about Oliver that gave us a good laugh. Oliver is respectful, hardworking, kind and funny and we are lucky to see his smiling face every day!!!

NEXT WEEK’S STAR: Alana

Have a Wonderful Week!
