Upcoming Events and Important Info

End of the Year – We will be sending home a letter with important end of the year dates and activities soon. The last day of school is Tuesday, June 9th.

Last Spirit Day – Student Counsel is behind the planning for spirit days such as twin day and crazy hair day. Friday April 24th is the last one of the year: Mix and Match Day. Wear your wackiest combinations this Friday!

Reading

Students are continuing with the Daily 5 activities and guided reading groups during literacy. Many students have made vast improvements in the way they spend their independent time during these rotations! I am also sending home less word work each week. Keep up the great work!

Soon the testing window will be open for another round of STAR, PALS, and Rigbies. Students will be tested to measure improvements in reading and other literacy skills during these tests. Scores will be available on end-of-the-year report cards through Infinite Campus.

Try it at home! Play tic-tac-toe using a difficult word to spell rather than “x” or “o”. It can be fun to know how to spell those tricky words correctly!

Writing

We are half way through our opinion unit. The kids have been doing a great job writing reviews on their favorite things. They are learning to persuade the reader buy giving lots of supporting reasons for their opinion. This week they wrote a review on their favorite restaurant and flavor ice cream. We will be celebrating the end of this unit with a walk to Oregon Froyo on Wednesday, April 9th. Please make sure you have sent your child’s $4.00 to school.

Try it at home! Ask your child to make a list of things you need at the store or things they want to do over the weekend!

Math

In math we are learning about fractions and equal shares. We continue to work on counting coins and have recently learned how to make change when purchasing things from our pretend play store. To give your child extra practice you could have a bowl of change on the counter and when they want a snack they would have to pay you for it. For example, Sam wants an apple. Before he gets the apple you would tell him an amount and he would then count out 47 cents and pay you for it. This is a fun way to get extra practice and the kids love to think their buying things!

Try it at home! Try it at home! Frequently ask your child, “what time is it?” It’s even better if you’re somewhere that only has an analog clock!!! You don’t need to give a huge lesson each time, just a quick explanation of where the short hand and the long hand are will add to their overall understanding over time.

You can also have your child login to their Moby Max account at mobymax.com. Their login is their name Mrs. Murphy and their password is their name1 (Mrsmurphy1). The school code is wi1571.

Extra, Extra! Read all about it!

Swimming during gym class continues of every “Day 4” of our special schedule. We swam on Tuesday which means the next Monday 4/27 we will head to the Oregon pool again!

Have a Wonderful Week!

10/19/14

Students, it is a school rule that we cannot wear costumes to school for Halloween. Even though we cannot change that rule, we would love to hear your opinion! Do you think kids should be allowed to wear Halloween costumes? Why or why not?
